Over our 44-year history, Steel Sales & Equipment has seen changes in partner companies and in customer needs. And this has definitely been the case in selecting metalworking fluids. Steel Sales & Equipment evaluates a company’s reliability and what differentiates their product in the marketplace as part of their selection process in determining which products to offer. Early on, the primary selection criterion was focused on product performance. There will always be a need to protect machine surfaces, to prevent corrosion, to control operating temperature and more. But today, customers also need safer products that are better for employees who use them and for the environment.
With many of our customers already familiar with our current lines of metalworking fluids from top chemical manufacturers ValCool (founded in 1994) and Falcon Industrial (founded in 1998), Steel Sales & Equipment is pleased to announce the addition of the Hangsterfer’s Laboratories slate of metalworking fluids. Founded in 1937, Hangsterfer’s is known in the industry for providing innovative metalworking lubricants that focus on performance, health, safety and the environment. In addition to our existing lines of metalworking products, Steel Sales maintains a stock of Hangsterfer’s coolants, machine lubricants, EDM fluid, and tapping fluids. These high quality lubricants are approved for use in the aerospace, medical and electronics industries. The automotive and oilfield industries are also known to benefit from these high performance products. Hangsterfer’s produces customized versions resulting in more than 300 products that are available at their New Jersey manufacturing facility.
Why Partner With Hangsterfer’s Laboratories?
In evaluating Hangsterfer’s as a potential product line offering, the first two words under Hangsterfer’s name, research and development, proved to support their brand. Throughout its history, Hangsterfer’s Laboratories has set itself apart by innovating and adapting. The earliest metalworking fluids were derived from whale lard while modern fluids are typically based on naphthenic, or paraffinic oils for machine lubrication. Hangsterfer’s own research and development have led to blending of emulsifiable oils, synthetic and semi-synthetic fluids, straight cutting oils, drawing and forming oils, EDM fluid, and coolant-compatible machine lubricants such as slideway oil, spindle oil, and hydraulic oil. Their high-performance lubricants are designed to maintain surface integrity and improve tolerances by regulating surface temperatures. With Hangsterfer’s development of the latest ‘bio hard’ technology, their products are also manufactured to be harder for bacteria to digest. These pioneering efforts have put Hangsterfer’s in a position to offer better and safer products than have been available in this industry’s history.
Hangsterfer’s Focus on Safety
Environmentally friendly is often a vague term that is undefined in what it means and what it benefits. Hangsterfer’s is clear in their view that lubricants must not contain ingredients that are persistent, bioaccumulative and toxic (PBT) as these are bad for exposed workers and bad for the environment. Hangsterfer’s does not use any PBT additives or ingredients. For chlorinated products, Hangsterfer’s only uses the safest long chain and very long chain chlorinated paraffins. Their use of environmentally safe technologies does not compromise the performance of their products. Extensive testing has shown their products to extend tool life, improve surface quality, and increase productivity. In turn, this leads to greater savings for metalworking industries and greater safety to their workers and the environment.
Eliminating hazardous materials from metalworking processes is good for people and the environment. But more and more it is also a regulatory requirement. Now that OSHA has adopted the Globally Harmonized System (GHS), hazardous materials are notated by universally understood pictograms on standardized product safety data sheets and product labeling. All of Hangsterfer’s products are GHS compliant with no hazardous pictograms needed. All products are compliant under EU’s Regulation Evaluation Authorization and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH). And four of their cutting oils are manufactured as USDA BioBased products.
